Petit Verdot

It is an international grape of French origin, in particular from the plains and the wetter territories of the Medoc.

It is also known by the synonyms Verdau, Petit Verdau, Lambrusquet, Boton blanc.

Some argue that it is the result of the domestication of the wild vine of the Atlantic Pyrenees. It is in great expansion in many warm wine-growing regions due to its late ripening. Even in the Maremma area, the surfaces have gone from about ten hectares to the current almost 190 hectares in a few years, primarily in the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia, then in the municipalities of Magliano, Grosseto, Roccastrada and Cinigiano.

It is a vine with a medium / medium-late ripening period and a medium-high vigor, which prefers poor and light soils and badly tolerates the libeccio winds that cause leaf drying. In cold years and in northern environments it often struggles to mature.

The wines obtained from Petit Verdot grapes are very colorful, with an intense, spicy aroma, with notes of red fruits and a full, fresh, tannic flavor, suitable for long aging.

Petit Verdot wines pair well with meat dishes, roasts, game and mature cheeses, and are excellent with mixed grills and stewed wild boar.
