A jury of local wine experts selected the ten best Vermentino wines of the 2023 edition
Mazzei: “With this 4th edition of the event, the spotlights once again are focused on what is proving to be one of the appellation’s crown jewels. Its success lies in the versatility of the variety and the teamwork of the growers and the Consorzio.”
April 2023_The fourth edition of the Vermentino Grand Prix took place April 17 in Grosseto at the star-rated Gabbiano 3.0 restaurant. Organized by the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana, the event promotes Vermentino – from its area of origin – which is proving more and more to be a growth phenomenon in the landscape of Tuscan wine. “The Vermentino Grand Prix has become a key promotional event for the producers of the Maremma brand. Once again, our appellation’s Vermentino proved that it possesses a big personality, not only in the young, quite drinkable version but also in the versions with more complex vinification and longer aging,” explained Francesco Mazzei, President of the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana, adding that “the initiative aims to keep on raising the bar and we are clearly on the right track.”

Each year, the jury for the Vermentino Grand Prix includes wine industry experts and star-rated restaurateurs from the Maremma Toscana region as well as the area’s leading wine shops. The Consorzio’s objective is to create a culture of cooperation to promote the Maremma Toscana brand as a whole.
Among the 60 competing labels, ten more than last year, the Top Ten again this year validate a trend that is becoming more firmly established among the producers – the single-varietal vinification of Vermentino. “A choice that epitomizes the desire to differentiate its own production, bringing to full expression the individuality of the variety in this specific region and the different terroirs,” stated Luca Pollini, Director of the Consorzio, who added, “Also arising from this edition is a clear predominance of the more complex and mature wines, compared to those of the most recent vintage, which only raises our hopes for the future. The Vermentino asserts its ability to produce complex wines with exceptional structure and longevity – like the great red wines.”
Pollini explained: “With 938 hectares, the Province of Grosseto represents 50% of Tuscan Vermentino vineyards and is the territory where the grape variety is growing in the highest percentages; today the Maremma Toscana is Italy’s leading cultivation region for Vermentino.” A look at the numbers is sufficient to understand the situation surrounding the Maremma Toscana Vermentino DOC phenomenon. It rose “from approx. 3,370,000 kg of grapes declared in the 2020 harvest to 3,715,000 in 2021, and more than 4,330,000 kg in the 2022 harvest. It now represents 34% of the entire quantity of grapes declared in the DOC Maremma Toscana in the last harvest,” pointed out Mazzei, adding that “its success stems from the great versatility of this type of grape and is also due to the teamwork of the vine growers and the Consorzio. The former have unanimously committed to a qualitative growth journey and the latter works constantly to organize events to promote and enhance the value of Vermentino.”
