Terroir and Vine Varieties

An area with a great variety of climatic, pedological and morphological characteristics, which characterize and make unique the wines produced on these lands: volcanic soils east of river Fiora, in the Pitigliano and Sorano districts; mainly marl and marl-pelite rock formations on the hills between rivers Fiora and Ombrone; clayish and clay-loam soils in the upper Maremma, on the low hills of the coastal areas and on the alluvial plain.

These are but a few examples that represent the variety of the Maremman terroir: no other territory in Tuscany can offer such a wide choice of wines as the Tuscan Maremma, with indigenous vine varieties (like Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo nero, Alicante, Sangiovese, Vermentino, Trebbiano, Ansonica, Malvasia, Grechetto, Pugnitello, Aleatico) and international ones (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot).

So, the Tuscan Maremma is not just Sangiovese, as growing just one vine variety is the case for many regional wine-producing districts. The Sangiovese vineyards represent less than half of the 8.550 hectares cultivated in the Maremma, so leaving room for other traditional varieties, like Vermentino and Ciliegiolo, and for international ones like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
